High potential and gifted education
Some students learn faster and more easily than others. These students may shine in creativity, thinking, leadership or sport. At our school, we recognise and nurture these strengths early. We support advanced learners with great lessons and activities to help them grow and thrive.
High potential
High potential students are those whose potential exceeds that of students of the same age in one or more domains. Their potential may be assessed as beyond the average range across any domain. They may benefit from an enriched or extended curriculum and learning opportunities beyond the typical level of students the same age.
Gifted
Gifted students’ potential significantly exceeds that of students of the same age in one or more domains. They may benefit from an extended curriculum and learning opportunities significantly beyond the typical level of students the same age.
Highly gifted
Gifted students’ potential significantly exceeds that of students of the same age in one or more domains. They may benefit from an extended curriculum and learning opportunities significantly beyond the typical level of students the same age.
The Four Domains of High Potential and Gifted Education
Intellectual Domain
The intellectual domain of potential refers to natural abilities in processing, understanding, reasoning, and the transfer of learning. Signs of high potential in the intellectual domain include verbal, numerical, logic and spatial aptitudes, synthesis and evaluation, abstract thinking, use of long term and working memory, and problem solving.
Physical Domain
The physical domain of potential refers to natural abilities in muscular movement and motor control. Signs of high potential in the physical domain include power, speed, muscular strength, endurance, flexibility, speed of reflexes, agility, coordination and balance.
Creative Domain
The creative domain of potential refers to natural abilities in imagination, invention and originality. Signs of high potential in the creative domain include originality, innovation and inventiveness that have social value in organising ideas, images, words, sound, movement or objects (including digital media).
Social and Emotional Domain
The social-emotional domain of potential refers to natural abilities in self-management and relating to and interacting with others. Signs of high potential in the social-emotional domain include empathy, social ease, tactfulness, perceptiveness, influence and persuasiveness, eloquence, leadership and charisma.
Our high potential and gifted education opportunities
Our students engage with HPGE education in the classroom, in our school, and across NSW.
We are committed to recognising and nurturing high potential and gifted students, ensuring every student has the opportunity to thrive at our school.
Every classroom teacher is supported to identify and extend high potential and gifted students across a range of curriculum areas.
We identify students' learning needs in the classroom and use evidence-informed teaching practices to challenge and extend students.
We provide learning pathways for identified students, including enrichment and acceleration.
Our supportive classroom environments promote a sense of belonging and encourage risk-taking, creativity and collaboration.
Our teachers engage in ongoing professional learning to support the diverse needs of all students, including our high potential and gifted learners.
Our school recognises that every student is individual, and we provide flexible and diverse opportunities for students to explore and grow their strengths outside the classroom.
Our school identifies and supports students with high potential through targeted enrichment, extension, acceleration and extra-curricular opportunities such as Debating, Public Speaking competitions,
All our students, including high potential and gifted students, are encouraged to take on leadership roles through Student Representative Council leadership, Captains and Councillors in Year 6, Library and Sports leadership and Junior AECG (Aboriginal Education Consultative Group).
Student talent is celebrated and extended through school based dance groups, cultural dance groups and drama audience experiences.
Our students can take part in representative sporting opportunities, the annual Panther Trophy rugby league tournament, coaching sessions, and differentiated Physical Education programs.
Our students participate in a wide range of statewide programs to extend and enrich student potential.
We provide access to local, state and national competitions and events to help students explore and extend their talents.
Students at our school have the chance to participate in a variety of exciting opportunities, including the APSMO Maths Olympiad, Premier’s Reading Challenge, Public Speaking competitions, enrichment classes, PSSA and sporting gala days, art competitions, and much more.
We also provide support for high potential and gifted students through state-wide and NSW Department of Education programs. We assist with entries, preparation, and reflection to ensure every experience contributes to ongoing learning and development.
What is high potential and gifted education?
High potential and gifted education (HPGE) is how our school supports students with advanced learning needs.
We do this through:
- effective teaching strategies like enrichment, extension and acceleration
- tailored support during lessons that stretch, challenge and inspire
- access to a wide range of opportunities both within and beyond our school.
